Although Henry David Thoreau, writing in Walden, focused especially on what is absent from, or unfulfilling in, organized society, he also urged us to look to nature for inspiration, solace, and authentic values:  “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” As the mist rises into the cool air from the water of the Snake River, a hush falls on the land, creating a moment of serenity to be savored and contemplated deeply now and at any time the demands of daily life overwhelm.
