Crowheart Butte, standing tall above the surrounding plains on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, has long been a key feature in Wyoming topography and history. It is visible for many miles and has served as an unmistakable landmark to those seeking their way in the Wind River Valley. But it has been a landmark not just to those who journeyed and used the area. It is also a landmark in time. To stand in the presence of Crowheart Butte is to stand as witness to the course of history. This was the location where, in 1866, the Eastern Shoshone and Bannocks fought the Crow Indians for control of the Wind River Basin; ultimately Chief Washakie, of the Shoshones, defeated Big Robber of the Crows when the two fought as individuals in the name of their followers.
